JOHN DAY RIVER: Bass, trout
Steelhead fishing has been good lately but flows and water visibility have been highly variable. Anglers are catching steelhead higher in the system by timing fishing trips when river conditions are favorable. Fly fishing is much more challenging this time of year due to higher flows compared to the fall, but spinners, spoons, crankbaits, and bobber jig fishing has been producing.

Note that the John Day Arm will remain closed for salmon and steelhead fishing from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31. The John Day Arm is defined as the section from the Mainline railroad bridge at the mouth of the Columbia to the falls. The Tumwater falls section is closed year-round for steelhead and salmon fishing and is delineated by the mile marker below the falls to 200 feet above the falls.
